The grade of Zelator (1=10) is the second level in The Golden Dawn. The Order once counted Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes), E.A. Waite (Rider-Waite Tarot cards), and Bram Stoker (Dracula) among its members.
The Zelator Ritual is based on a ceremony concerning the Hebrew Tabernacle in the Wilderness described in Exodus.
The secrets of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn were revealed in Israel Regardie’s The Golden Dawn.
Regardie writes:
“The Sign is given by raising the right hand to an angle of 45°. It is the position in which the Hierophant interposed for you between the Hiereus and the Hegemon.” (p. 147)
